So many people find it hard to talk about how they feel. Are you reluctant about expressing your feelings?
A recent scientific study found many people are reluctant to express gratitude.
But most of us feel the same discomfort about sharing all emotions.
Here are some of the reasons for that:
We assume the person we’re speaking to already knows how we feel.
We believe maybe we’ll make the other person uncomfortable because we’re awkward and don’t express ourselves with the right words.
But that’s so wrong.
Say you want to ask a guy you like to go for coffee or lunch.
To you, your feelings for him are obvious. So you figure that, if he liked you, he would already have approached and asked you out.
And you don’t know what to say. You’re afraid you’ll sound like an idiot.
The truth is, the guy probably doesn’t understand how you feel at all. He’s oblivious. Or, if he detects them, he’s insecure and doubts his own perceptions.
When you talk to him, the words you use won’t matter – only the feelings you get across to him.
He probably won’t even notice whether your words are smooth enough.
He’ll understand you’re really saying, “I like you.”
Nothing else matters.
